Yesterday's panelists discussing contract/temp work reiterated the advice that law students looking for work should definitely have profiles on Linkedin. In fact, they indicated, searching through Linkedin is a regular practice they use when looking to fill positions. A couple of recent blog posts contain lots of specific pointers on setting up your profile as a law student to maximize being found by employers and to expand your network in general. Solo Practice: What You Need to Know

Learn all about starting a solo practice from a panel to speak on Thursday, April 16, in room 246. Recent Moritz graduates who are successfully developing their own solo practices will speak on a range of concerns in this area: how to locate and market your practice, how to finance the start and operation of a practice, how to use mentors and CLE to support your practice, and other practical office administration concerns. Students interested in this topic should consider attending the contract/temp panel described in the previous post since practitioners often use this work to supplement income while developing their practices.

Experts Speak on the Benefits of Contract/Temp Work

Don't miss this presentation to be held Wednesday, April 15, in room 246 if you are interested in the possibility of this kind of work after graduation, perhaps while looking for a permanent position. Representatives from three temporary legal employment entities will explain the nature of contract/temporary legal work (who hires, pay, assignment lengths, etc.), the benefits of doing contract work, and how to obtain this kind of work.

Baker Hostletler reception for 1Ls

2L Jimmie Marra recommends that ambitious 1Ls recognize the upcoming Baker Hostetler reception as a great way to meet the people who could matter when it comes time for hiring. "I met my (eventual OCI) interviewer at this same event last year and he remembered me when I stepped into the interview room. Needless to say I believe that went a long way to helping me secure my job this coming summer at Baker." With bankruptcy practices doing better than many other practice areas in the current economy, building your understanding and vocabulary in this area could help you distinguish yourself in the job market. The website of the Federal Courts contains an outline of bankruptcy basics and, additionally, the recently added an eight-part online course, a series of video presentations totalling about thirty minutes, to educate the laywers and the public.
